Heddon’s Gate is hidden in a spectacular setting at the end of a quarter-mile private drive, on the steep slopes of the magnificently wooded Heddon Valley. This is an owner-run true country house hotel, secluded and tranquil, set in more than 2½ acres of its own gardens and woodland. Starting life as a hunting lodge in the 1890s, the hotel has expanded over the decades, and is now a charming fusion of different styles. We are an AA two-star Country House Hotel with a 78% merit score, and are proud to be included in the independent and respected Good Hotel Guide. Here our guests appreciate the relaxed and friendly atmosphere, enjoy good company and relish fine food and wine. We welcome well-behaved dogs (subject to conditions and charges); we normally decline to take children. The public lounges are welcoming, spacious and comfortable. The proper bar is well-stocked and the wine list carefully chosen. Eating at Heddon’s Gate is always an occasion. Start the day with a hearty English breakfast, or a lighter option if preferred. Do consider upgrading some of all of your stay to half board, which includes afternoon tea and our excellent 4-course dinner plus coffee. The limited-choice menu changes completely every day, and everything is freshly cooked on the day. Therefore we do require notice if you wish to take dinner – ideally at least 48 hours. The price for half board is £31·50 per person per night. The natural beauty of Exmoor makes it a walker’s paradise. Explore dramatic coastal scenery, spectacular moorland, wooded combes and varied wildlife. Many favourite walks start directly from the hotel.
